| Corcovado
National Park covers much of the Osa Peninsula and is a repository
for some of the nation's greatest wildlife treasures. The park
is part of the Corcovado Conservation Area, encompassing adjacent
forest reserves and other protected areas. The climate at Corcovado
on the coast and plains and in the valleys is generally hot and
very humid. The climate in the highlands, which reach 745 meters
above sea level, is mainly cool, more as a result of the cloud
cover than the height. Average annual rainfall is 4500-7000mm.
Its
41,788 hectares encompass eight habitats, from mangrove swamp
and jolillo palm grove to mountain forest. The park protects more
than 400 species of birds (20 are endemic), 116 of amphibians
and reptiles, 500 species of trees, and 139 of mammals. Corcovado´s
wildlife is a good place to spot the red-eyed tree frog; four
species of turtles -green, pacific ridley, hawksbill, leatherback
-nest on the park beaches. The wildlife within the park is varied
and prolific, some of the protected species are: scarlet macaw,
ocelot, tapirs, harpy eagle, crocodiles, spider, howler, squirrel
and white-faced capuchin monkeys, poison dark frog, and more.
