This 9969 hectare refuge is of interest especially to birders,
who come to see a variety of waterfowl including anhingas, roseate
spoonbills, storks, ducks, herons, and the largest Costa Rican
colony of the olivaceous cormorant. The refuge is the only place
in Costa Rica where the Nicaraguan grackle regularly nests. The
reserve is remarkable, also, for its healthy population of endangered
mammals species, including jaguars, cougars, tapirs, ocelots and
tayras. There are always sure to be plenty of monkeys playacting.
And the crocodile colony is perhaps the best-protected in Costa
Rica, though caimans are far more numerous and easily seen. The
Rio Frio, which cuts through the refuge, makes an ideal waterway
for guided boat tours into Caņo Negro.
