Sportfishing at Osa Peninsula

Osa Peninsula, Golfo Dulce, and south to Punta Burica offers some of the best fishing opportunities you can find.
The mouth of the Rio Sierpe is surrounded by a lush mangrove estuary system that offers fishing for snook, snapper, and corvina.  Outside this protected area is a massive volcanic rock reef system where trolling  often produces tuna, wahoo, and sometimes sailfish or marlin. The giant Pacific cubera snapper is probably the most famous fish in this area weighing often over 50 pounds. More than 40 world records have been registered in this area, including sailfish, black, blue, and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, cubera snapper, Spanish and sierra mackeral, roosterfish and more.

Along the coast of the mainland several volcanic structures attract many varieties of snapper as well as roosterfish. Inshore you will find further plenty of jacks, runners, mackerel, amberjack, roosterfish.

Marlin
Marlin can be caught every month of the year if the water temperature is up. Large numbers start to show up in July through December. July and August record the largest Black Marlin, and Blues are taken often during the prime Sailfish months.

Sailfish
Peak season from March through May and again September through the end of November. Like Marlin, Sailfish are also taken year round. It is common to raise 10 to 15 Sailfish a day with over 50 on a spectacular day (these numbers caught at Crocodile Bay Lodge)

Tuna
You can find the best fishing for the 100 pound and up during marlin and sailfish season, but schools of smaller tuna (up to 30 pound) can nearly always be found outside the season.

Dorado
Also known as Dolphin fish or Mahi Mahi, Dorado are more abundant from May - October when the rivers are high and send lots of debris to the ocean. Dorado can be caught throughout the year.

Wahoo
They are found year round only in limited numbers, but you never know!

Roosterfish
This is the most exciting inshore and surf fish available and the region is famous for its big roosters. In the 30 mile long Golfo Dulce and the volcanic shoreline structure they can be caught virtually any month of the year. 20-40 p per fish are common.

Cubera Snapper
This is the most popular of all the local Snappers, due to its size and sheer strength. Fish over 50lbs have been caught in the area, year round.

Snook
The world record Snook 1991 came from these area!  Although available year round, May through October is usually better, during the rainy season.

You can also find throughout the year: Jack Crevalle, Corvina and Grouper, Tripletail, Barracuda, Sierra Mackerel, Big Eye Trevally, Bluefin Trevally and African Pompano .
